I’m sure that Mike McGinn is celebrating the news that Nickels will probably not make it to the ballot, but based on his main issue (the tunnel) it doesn’t matter if it’s Nickels or Mallahan. They both favor the tunnel. Nickel’s followers aren’t going to swing into McGinn’s camp.
The sad thing is, while I have my own issues with Nickels, he has the right view. “What the people want isn’t always what the people need”. Seattle had a chance to get the monorail. Without foresight they thought they could halt the inevitable growth of the city by making it less appealing. Now we are just 20 years and millions of dollars behind on effective mass transit system.
Does McGinn want to sit around the urban fire pit passing the talking stick to everyone who wants to talk about their feelings about the Viaduct until the next earthquake does more than put cracks in it?
I’m all for public opinion, but eventually someone has to make a decision. It will never please everyone, but being a leader isn’t about being the coolest kid in school. It’s about making the hard decisions
